Use quiz attempt limits to control how many times a delegate may submit a quiz before it is marked as failed. You can optionally allow administrators to reset attempts from the quiz answers report.
Where to configure: Training → Knowledge → Quiz Master
Where to review and reset attempts: Training → Courses → Status → View Quiz Answers
Before you begin
- Attempt limits can only be set on organisation-owned quiz templates (not system/global templates).
- If you use a system quiz in a course, clone it to your organisation first, then set the limit on the clone.
- Leave the attempt limit blank or set it to 0 for unlimited attempts (existing behaviour).
Part 1: Set an attempt limit on a quiz
Step 1 - Open the Quizzes list
- Sign in as an administrator.
- Go to Training → Knowledge → Quiz Master
Step 2 - Locate your quiz
- Find the quiz template you want to configure.
- Check the Attempt Limit and Reset Allowed columns for the current settings.
Step 3 - Open Set Attempt Limit
- In the row for your quiz, open the actions menu (dropdown on the left of the row).
- Select Set Attempt Limit.
Note: This option appears only for organisation-owned quizzes. If you do not see it, clone the quiz to your organisation first.
Step 4 - Configure the limit and reset option
- In the Set Quiz Attempt Limit modal, enter the Maximum number of attempts (for example, 2).
- To allow unlimited attempts, leave the field blank or enter 0.
- Optional: tick Allow admins to reset a delegate's attempts if administrators should be able to grant another set of attempts after a delegate has failed out.
- Click Save.
Step 5 - Confirm the settings saved
- After saving, the Quizzes list refreshes.
- Confirm the Attempt Limit column shows your limit (or Unlimited).
- Confirm Reset Allowed shows a tick (when a limit is set and reset is enabled) or a cross (when reset is disabled).
Part 2: Review delegate attempts (Quiz Answers)
After delegates have taken the quiz in a training course, use the Quiz Answers page to see how many attempts each person has used.
Step 1 - Open the course and quiz answers
- Go to Training → Courses.
- Open the relevant course Status page.
- For the quiz content item, open Quiz Answers (or follow your usual link to the quiz answers report).
Step 2 - Check quiz settings in the page header
- At the top of the Quiz Answers page, review:
- Attempt limit - the maximum attempts configured for this quiz
- Admin reset allowed - whether the reset option is enabled (Yes / No)
Step 3 - Review each delegate's attempt status
- Scroll through the answers table.
- Each delegate is grouped under their email address.
- Next to the email you will see:
- A status badge (for example: In progress, Passed, or Failed – no attempts left)
- Attempts used (for example: 2 of 3 attempts used)
Part 3: Reset a delegate's attempts (optional)
Use this only when Admin reset allowed is Yes and the delegate has used all attempts without passing.
Step 1 - Find an eligible delegate
- On the Quiz Answers page, locate a delegate whose status is Failed – no attempts left.
- Confirm their attempts show they have used the full limit (for example, 2 of 2 attempts used).
Step 2 - Reset attempts
- Click the Reset attempts button next to that delegate's email.
- Confirm the prompt when asked.
- Wait for the success message; the table will refresh.
Step 3 - Verify the delegate can retake the quiz
- Ask the delegate to open their training course again, or verify yourself using a test delegate account.
- The delegate should be able to open and submit the quiz again from a clean attempt count.
- On Quiz Answers, their status should update after they use their new attempts.
